Introduction

Experiential Journeys is founded on an ethos of responsible tourism, encounters, experiences & unique accommodations filled with character.

We focus on delivering innovative world class travel experiences that are socially and environmentally responsible and believe that sustainable travel is a goal achievable by everyone in the travel industry. As a pioneer in sustainable travel with over 2 decades of experience, we strive to lead by example to champion this cause. Experiential Journeys is fuelled by a passionate, multicultural and diverse team who excel at designing and managing experiential travel.

What we do

We engage in a wide variety of sustainability initiatives that benefit the local community and the environment. A notable few are:
  • Intervening and helping communities to protect their lives, livelihood and their environment – a prime example of one of our projects would be the rehabilitation of a vast ancient water tank in the South-Eastern locality of Buttala, to help mitigate the Human-Elephant Conflict. The tank now plays a dual role, acting as a natural barrier and also providing water to irrigate the fields during the dry season. We also ensured that food sources were made available for the elephants on their side of the tank.

  • Encounters and experiences with artists and performers of art forms that are fading away are included in our travel programmes, to increase awareness and interest in them.
  • Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – We completely moved away from using disposable plastic over a decade ago, adopted recycling options at our offices and discouraged the use of fossil fuel as much as possible. We’ve also moved towards using renewable energy at our campsites and with our transport options.
  • We established the Academy of EcoTourism, Wildlife & Nature Interpretation (AEWNI) to provide knowledge, skills, and experience to those entering the Eco-Tourism field, as well as those aspiring to enter a career in Wildlife Conservation and Research. AEWNI also aims to create awareness through education about wildlife, and it also promotes conservation and research among the students with the objective of nurturing a sustainable future.

What we don’t do

“Be kind to everything” is a mantra we truly believe in.

All animals deserve respect and kindness, so we don’t engage in or promote anything that involves animal cruelty or exploitation. Sadly, there are quite a few tourist traps and staged tourist shows around the country that exploit domesticated animals as well those from the wild. Experiential Journeys does not promote any of these attractions and does not encourage visits to them. We understand that some clients may still want to visit these attractions, so we do our best to educate them on the issues. Thereafter, if clients still wish to visit these attractions, they are free to do so by making their own arrangements with their chauffeur to go there.

How we help / Contribute

Be part of the solution. The impact of your actions will be felt today as well as by future generations.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle as much as you can during your travels. Every little bit helps.
  • Reduce food and plastic waste wherever you can.
  • Conserve water and electricity. Indulge when you need to, be conservative at other times.

  • Offset the emissions from your journey by signing up for a Carbon Offset Programme.
  • Help support local economies and opt for sustainable activities during your travels.
  • If you are able to, leave a place better than you found it. Even a little gesture like passing on knowledge is a contribution that makes a great impact.
  • We have multiple sustainability projects going on at any given time. You can partner with us on a project (or more) and we would be glad to have you onboard.
  • Recommend us to volunteers. Travellers on a career break, taking a student gap-year or those who are keen on internships are welcome to work closely with our field conservation units which operate in partnership with local communities.

There are many more ways in which you can help, so let us know if you would like to be more involved and we’d be happy to point you in the right direction!

Our values

Experiential Journeys leads by example and ensures that our business has long term benefits for the local communities, the environment and our customers.

We believe in developing and promoting, ethical, responsible and sustainable holidays, thereby creating jobs and income for our communities, whilst minimising our impact on the environment and our planet’s natural resources. This has led to the development of our own Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy, Eco C-R-E-A-M, as a guide in our continuing journey.

Eco C-R-E-A-M stands for Eco Community-Responsibility-Environment-Awareness-Management, and some of the key components are:

  • Community Responsibility – Recruiting and training staff from the locality, purchasing locally produced goods and services, supporting community tourism initiatives, contributing financially to uplift the standards of the locality, etc.
  • Wildlife and the Environment – Protecting endangered species, actively educating communities and campaigning against animal abuse of all forms, engaging in development projects such as environment education, wildlife conservation and reforestation, discouraging the collection, removal or cutting of any plant or plant parts (seeds, roots or leaves) by our customers, staff and communities, etc.
  • Waste Management – Actively pursuing our plastic-free philosophy, converting all organic waste into compost waste, recycling all paper, cardboard, aluminium and metal waste, etc.
  • Energy – Recycling coconut shells for BBQ’s and campfires, using only fallen branches or trees for campfires, using LPG gas for hot water, and solar energy for all other requirements, etc.
