Ayubowan! Welcome to your culinary holiday to Sri lanka. Your first night will be spent at the coastal fishing town of Negombo which is a short distance away from the airport. Although your time here will be brief, there is much to explore here, either on your own or with your trusty personal chauffeur. With golden beaches, churches and buildings influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonisation, fantastic nightlife and a fascinating mix of cuisines, Negombo is a great place to get lost in and make memories.
After a quick morning excursion in Negombo, it is time to head out to one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. The city of Anuradhapura, founded in 377 BCE, is over 2,000 years old and full of historical and religious significance. Massive man-made lakes, towering dagobas, ancient ruins and vast paddy fields are some of the features dotted about the landscape that you will love visiting. It’s a great place to understand Buddhist culture, rural village life, and, of course, continue your culinary holiday discovering authentic Sri Lankan dishes.
Connected to the rest of the island by a very thin causeway, the peninsula of Jaffna has picturesque islands, a rich culture, amazing food and welcoming, friendly people. Food tours in Sri Lanka wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this region, which will introduce you to a completely new set of flavours to delight the palate. Although the cuisine you encounter is influenced by South India, it has a very distinct identity, with coconut and spices playing a major role in delivering flavour. Fresh seafood dishes, rasam, pittu and hoppers are popular foods here and should not be missed. Jaffna has many must-see locations too, like the Nilavarai Bottomless Well, ancient temples and ruins, and the spectacular Jaffna Fort.
Your culinary adventures in Sigiriya will feature fresh leafy Mallung, freshwater fish and a whole host of seasonal vegetables. The drive down to Sigiriya is quite scenic, and along the way, you are likely to spot many birds and animals, including the iconic Sri Lankan wild elephant. Your destination, Sigiriya, is the home of the famed Sigiriya Rock fortress. Complex water features, landscaped gardens, amazing 360 degree views and many mysteries await you here. The marvels continue at Polonnaruwa too, which you will visit on the following day. This sprawling ancient city is dotted with palaces, shrines, monasteries, pavilions, parks, ponds and irrigation lakes.
The journey to Kandy has a couple of interesting excursions on the way which require a stop in the city of Dambulla. The first is modern and involves a visit to one of the biggest fresh produce trading hubs, and the second takes you to a cave temple that dates back to the first century BCE. Kandy, the hill country capital city of the last Sri Lankan King, is full of legends, mediaeval palaces, spice trails and sacred temples. Your culinary adventures here will be a mix of traditional Sri Lankan foods and the popular dish of Indian origin, Biriyani!
Freshly brewed teas, strawberries and cream, and piping hot meals await you in the chilly little town of Nuwara Eliya. This popular holiday destination, also known as “Little England”, is more about a relaxed way of life and your exploration here will be at a leisurely pace. The gourmet tour will be dominated by fresh produce that’s grown at higher elevations. Being at the heart of the tea country, you will chat with tea pluckers, get a deep understanding of how the finest tea in the world is made, and taste a variety of Ceylon Tea fresh from the factory.
The morning brings a delightful culinary lesson and a visit to a farm in Nuwara Eliya. Then, it’s time to switch up the mode of travel and hitch a ride on a train to your next destination – Ella! The ride is wonderfully scenic and will give you the opportunity to chat and connect with locals, and continue your culinary tour of Sri Lanka by sampling local snacks – samosas, vadeys, kadala, achcharu and more – sold on the train. The Ella region is perched on a cliff and is filled with views for days, spectacular waterfalls, a cool climate and warm, welcoming people. Be prepared for amazing hikes, waterfall bathing, great nightlife and awesome street food!
Culinary holidays to Sri Lanka aren’t only about the food, so it’s time to head all the way to the Deep South and the vast jungles of Yala National Park for some exciting sightings! This leg of your journey will introduce you to more wildlife than ever before. Leopards, Elephants, Crocodiles, Sambar, Eagles, Snakes, Peacocks… the list is never ending and the best part is you’ll probably see most of them without even going into the Park! En route to Yala, there will be a stop at a rural village to gain an understanding of traditional village agriculture practices and how it leads to sustainable food production.
It’s time to head out from the deep jungles of Yala, and journey to the culture rich coastal town of Galle. Undoubtedly, the most prominent feature of this town is the famous Galle Fort. This UNESCO World Heritage site was originally built by the Portuguese, extended by the Dutch and modified by the British during their respective colonisations. Today, it is a beautifully eclectic mix of cosy homes, cafes with fusion cuisines that are making waves in food tourism in Asia, intriguing stores, quirky hotels and art galleries frequented by travellers, artists, writers, photographers and designers. The best way to experience it all would be to stay within the Fort, and that is precisely what you will be doing!

Sri Lanka is a nation where religion and culture occupy an important place in the day-to-day lives of the local people. It is important to be aware of the customs and practices that are particular to the location you are visiting, so here are a few general tips to keep in mind during your travels. Your guide / chauffeur will assist you with more detailed information.
Although it may sound strange for a tropical country, Sri Lankan hotels operate on seasonal rates. This is simply due to a particular region having attractions or weather that’s best enjoyed during a specific time of the year and also due to the demand coinciding with the European winter season. So it’s not uncommon to have two rates that apply on different dates in the same month.
But to make things less complicated for you, Experiential Journeys does things differently by giving you the lowest season ball-park rate on the website, and follows up with the exact rate upon receiving an inquiry or booking request along with the confirmed travel dates. You will not be charged anything until the final price is agreed upon.
Experiential Journeys is an Australian based company and uses AUD as the main currency. We serve a global community of travellers predominantly from New Zealand, U.K., U.S.A., Canada & U.A.E.
