1st Night - Negombo
Ayubowan! Welcome to your architecture holiday to Sri Lanka. Your first night will be spent at the coastal fishing town of Negombo which is a short distance away from the airport. Although your time here will be brief, there is much to explore here, either on your own or with your trusty personal chauffeur. With golden beaches, churches and building architecture influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonisation, art galleries and a fascinating mix of cuisines, Negombo is a great place to get lost in and make memories.
The first day of your private, Sri Lankan architecture tour can be enjoyed at your own pace. You will be picked up from the airport by your private chauffeur and taken to your hotel. If you arrive during the day, you can explore the town, visit the local art galleries, go on a boat ride along the famous Dutch canal and of course, catch some sun on the wide, golden beaches. At night, the best place to visit is ‘Hotel Road’, which is packed with bars, seafood restaurants and hotels. You can do all of these activities by yourself or accompanied by your chauffeur.
2nd & 3rd Nights - Wilpattu
You’re headed to the vast jungles of Wilpattu next! The largest National Park in Sri Lanka has a fantastically diverse population of wildlife, and is a great place to see Leopards, Sloth Bears and Elephants. An intriguing detour awaits you on the way, at the ancient citadel of Yapahuwa. This citadel was a relatively short lived, late 13th century capital city of mediaeval Sri Lanka. But during its 11 short years this city flourished, which resulted in some beautiful Sri Lankan architecture. Built upon a 90-metre-tall rock, this stronghold was inspired by the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a location that you will visit later on during this tour.
After an early breakfast we will leave Negombo and head to Yapahuwa. There’s plenty to see at this ancient stronghold including moats, ramparts, caves, ancient stupas, Chinese-style lion statues (an indication of the ties with China at the time), and its biggest showpiece, a massive ornamental stairway. You will head to Wilpattu next, arriving in time for an authentic Sri Lankan lunch. After a brief rest you will be taken on a private, guided safari of Wilpattu National Park. A delicious dinner by a roaring campfire awaits your return from the safari, and the day is capped off with a night walk along the borders of the Park, to meet the nocturnal wildlife.
An early morning start will see you set off on a full-day safari with packed breakfasts, lunches, and refreshments. Full day safaris are really great for sightings of Leopards, Sloth Bears and Elephants, as it allows you to be inside the park for an extended period of time and cover terrain that cannot be reached during a half day safari. At the end of the safari, a delicious BBQ dinner under the stars awaits you at the campsite. After dinner, you will set off on another exciting night walk, where you will get to know more about the nocturnal wildlife in the area and even possibly catch sight of the elusive Slender Loris!
4th & 5th Nights - Anuradhapura
We get back on the architecture holiday trail with a visit to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital city. Dating back to the 4th century BCE, Anuradhapura was probably the greatest monastic city of the ancient world and was a proud political capital that dominated the country for over 1,300 years. The Buddhist and Indian influenced architecture in the palaces, monasteries and monuments, will be the focus of your travels here. A quick detour on the way will take you to the impressive Aukana Buddha statue which is indicative of influences the Gandhara school of art and the Amaravati school of art of India had in Sri Lanka.
Ruwanwelisaya – one of the world’s tallest ancient monuments which houses the Buddha’s relics, Thuparamaya – the first Buddhist temple, Lovamahapaya – a nine storied skyscraper of the ancient world, Isurumuniya – famous for its intriguing carvings, the 4th century CE Samadhi Statue carved out of dolomite marble, Kuttam Pokuna and Eth Pokuna – elaborately constructed bathing ponds, and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi – the 2,250 year-old sacred Bo tree, grown from the southern branch of the sacred Bo tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment. You will also get to partake in an offering ritual at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
Your morning will begin with a private culinary lesson with the chef, where you will learn to make a couple of traditional Sri Lankan dishes. After breakfast, your architecture holiday will take you to the site of the Aukana Buddha statue. Exquisitely carved out of a granite rock face, this 46-foot tall standing statue follows the proportion of nine faces, where the body height is nine times the length of the face. This iconometry was popular among sculptors during the 8th century CE. After exploration of the ancient temple and the nearby scenic Kalawewa, an ancient reservoir, you will head to Anuradhapura.

6th, 7th & 8th Nights - Sigiriya
During this leg of the tour, you will visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress with its amazing landscaped boulder gardens, water gardens and frescoes; the curious and legendary mountain of Ritigala; the intriguing and ancient Dambulla Cave Temple, and Polonnaruwa, the second oldest capital city of Sri Lanka famed for its well-preserved sculptures and architecture. During your exploration of these ancient ruins, in addition to the inspired architectural designs, you will also notice the gradual shift from granite to clay-bricks in the architecture styles, a hallmark of kingdoms succeeding Anuradhapura. You will also stumble upon a modern-day masterpiece – Diyabubula, an artistic garden oasis created by the legendary artist & sculptor, Laki Senanayake during this architecture tour.
After breakfast, you will head to the curious Ritigala Mountain. Rising abruptly from the surrounding landscape, this mountain has a wonderful mix of forest types, micro climates and wildlife to encounter. The ruins of a monastery, stone bridges, raised platforms and courtyards dating back to the 1st century BCE are found here, along with a mediaeval man-made reservoir called Banda Pokuna. Legends claim that Ritigala is a chunk of rock that fell from the skies when Lord Hanuman was carrying a part of the Himalayas to Sri Lanka. The healing herbs and plants at the summit seem to give some weight to this claim, as Hanuman was transporting the mountain expressly for the medicinal herbs found there.
In the morning, you will visit Diyabubula, Laki Senanayake’s artistic oasis. Laki transformed an arid location over a period of 50 years into a lush forest, water garden and an open-air art gallery. After exploring this area, you will return to the hotel for lunch and relaxation. The visit to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is set for the late afternoon. With its beautifully landscaped gardens, gravity driven fountains, architecture, and frescoes, Sigiriya is a wonderful showcase of the creativity and engineering prowess of ancient Sri Lankans. The climb up the rock is set to conclude in time to view the glorious sunset and panoramic views from the top.
Your architecture holiday continues at the UNESCO World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa. Here you will see strong Indian influences melding with a growing Sri Lankan identity in the architecture, art and sculpture of this sprawling ancient city. This is the last of the great cities with extensive and elaborate architecture, as constant invasions forced the Sri Lankan kings to embrace a nomadic life, with kingdoms being moved around regularly. The break for lunch will be a home-style authentic clay pot meal experience and includes a culinary lesson as well. Afterwards you will visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, another World Heritage Site, which is full of cave paintings, statues and relics accumulated over a period of 2,000 years.
9th & 10th Nights - Kandy
Kandy, the hill country capital city of the last Sri Lankan King, is full of legends, mediaeval palaces, and sacred temples. The architecture in Kandy is a wonderful mix of many cultures due to the multiple invasions the island faced. The South Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and British architectural influences led to some marvellous creations, which added to the splendour of Kandy. Religion is a key theme you will encounter in this region, with many temples dedicated to worshipping Lord Buddha and significant Hindu Gods. Apart from this, there are many facets of Kandy to be enjoyed including the cuisine, nature, extensive botanical gardens and its rich history & culture.
The next stop on your architecture tour of Sri Lanka, will be at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre, a massive trading hub for fresh produce from many parts of the island. Here, you will sample and learn about various types of fruits & vegetables grown all over Sri Lanka. In Kandy, you will visit a community that makes Sesath, a device used as a fan and sunshade, that dates back to ancient times. You will also visit the Temple of the Tooth, the Sri Dalada Maligawa, where the sacred relic of a tooth belonging to Lord Buddha is kept. You will be able to witness a daily sacred ritual known as Thewawa, during your visit to this temple.
After a short drive to the nearby town of Gampola, we will begin the walking tour of 3 ancient temples. The walk will take you across fertile paddy fields and colourful villages, which really let you get a feel for the way of life in this area. The origins of the 3 temples – Gadaladeniya Vihara, Lankathilaka Viharaya and Embekke Devalaya – can be traced back to the 14th century. Each has its own unique features, from stone carvings to paintings to Indian architectural influences. At the end of this excursion, you are once again free to explore Kandy at your leisure.
11th Night - Nuwara Eliya
The chilly little town of Nuwara Eliya is possibly every Sri Lankan’s favourite destination, and we believe it could be yours too. Known as “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya with its colonial architecture and stuck-in-a-time-gone-by feel, is all about a relaxed way of life. Strawberries and cream, lazy treks through lush green tea estates and piping hot meals by Lake Gregory await you in this town and we highly recommend you experience them all! Being at the heart of the tea country, you will also get to chat with tea pluckers, understand how the finest tea in the world is made, and taste a variety of Ceylon Tea fresh from the factory.
On the way from Kandy, we will stop for a chat with some members of the tea plucker community. Here you will get to know their way of life and understand the art of plucking the perfect tea leaves. Then we will head to a tea factory, where you will find out how tea goes from being a leaf on a bush, to a warm cup of golden goodness! Then we will head out on a walking tour of Nuwara Eliya town. The town has a great mix of colonial and Tudor architecture, historical sites and temples, amazing views, and cuisines, all of which you will encounter on your walking tour.
12th & 13th Nights - Tangalle
It’s time to head to the long golden beaches of the coastal city of Tangalle. Here we will encounter the final architectural creation by the godfather of Sri Lankan architecture, Geoffrey Bawa. Aptly named ‘The Last House’, it is an excellent example of Bawa architecture and his pioneering concept of Tropical Modernism. You will have plenty of time to take in the intricacies of this delightful property during your two-day stay here. Tangalle is also home to the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara, a Buddhist temple complex dating back to the 3rd century. Situated on a rock, much like Sigiriya, this 7-temple complex is home to ancient statues, paintings, and sculptures, and is a fascinating place to visit.
Leaving after breakfast, a scenic drive will wind its way down the mountains and take you to Tangalle, all the way down on the South coast. Geoffrey Bawa’s final architectural creation, The Last House, is located on a narrow strip of land with a lagoon on one side and a secluded beach on the other. Designed in a horseshoe shape surrounding a large pool, this villa has uninterrupted views of the landscape, with living areas and bedrooms tastefully decorated with chic furnishings, light textiles and local art. The agenda for this day is left open, so that it can be enjoyed at your own pace.
Your stay at The Last House won’t be rushed, in fact, the only excursion for the day is set for late afternoon; so, you have plenty of time to study Geoffrey Bawa’s architecture style, explore your surroundings or take a swim in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, which is just at your doorstep. The 7 cave temples of Mulkirigala are a short drive away, and are located on 5 terraced areas at different elevations. You can take your time exploring the location and getting to know its rich history and religious significance. The climb to the top to enjoy the fantastic panoramic view is set to coincide with the sunset.
14th Night - Galle
Next on the list of your architecture tour of Sri Lanka, is the coastal town of Galle. Undoubtedly, the most prominent feature of this town is the culture-rich Galle Fort which was built by the Portuguese colonists, and modified by the Dutch and British, during their respective colonisations. Today, it is a beautifully eclectic mix of cosy homes, cafes with fusion cuisines, intriguing stores, quirky hotels, and art galleries frequented by travellers, artists, writers, photographers and designers. The best way to experience this UNESCO World Heritage site would be to stay within the Fort, and that is precisely what you will be doing!
After breakfast, a short drive will get you to your next destination, Galle. Here you will be taken on a walking tour of the Galle Fort. On this tour, you’ll get an insight into the colonial history, legends and mysteries of the Fort. You’ll also meet members of the local community and enjoy a traditional home cooked meal. You are free to explore and experience the fort and Galle Town thereafter, as there’s some wonderful colonial architecture to be seen here. We recommend that you head to the ramparts in the evening to watch the sunset whilst enjoying some street food.
15th & 16th Nights - Bentota
Spanning two hills, with views stretching out across a lake to the Indian Ocean, is the sprawling and picturesque University of Ruhuna, designed by Geoffrey Bawa. Your journey from Galle to Bentota includes a visit to this spectacular Geoffrey Bawa project in Matara, as well as a stopover at The Lighthouse Hotel – yet another signature Geoffrey Bawa hotel. At your final destination of Bentota are the spectacular gardens Lunuganga and The Brief, created by Geoffrey Bawa and his elder brother Bevis Bawa respectively, which will be the major highlights of this leg of your journey.
Your first stop will be the 74-acre University of Ruhuna. As with all Geoffrey Bawa designs, water plays a significant role here from the large lake to how the views of the ocean play out from the multi-level pavilions and courtyards. Next you will get to explore The Lighthouse Hotel with its interlinked open spaces, amazing views, intelligent use of the landscape, and an absolutely jaw dropping sculpture recreating the Portuguese landing in Galle, dominating the central stairwell. At the end of the day, we will reach your accommodation for the night, the simply stunning… Lunuganga estate.
The first half of your day is dedicated to your enjoyment of the gardens of Lunuganga. Lovingly crafted by Geoffrey Bawa across a period of 50 years, the transformation of this former derelict rubber estate is simply spectacular. With its ancient Sri Lankan water gardens, Italian Renaissance gardens, sculptures, and Japanese garden art, Lunuganga estate is an amazing wonderland to get lost in. The afternoon excursion will bring you to an equally amazing garden – The Brief. Crafted to perfection across several decades by Bevis Bawa, it is a masterpiece with a wonderful mix of plant life, water features, anthropomorphic flower vases, fantastical head sculptures and inspired landscaping.
17th & 18th Nights - Colombo
We’re heading to the bustling city of Colombo next! There is much to explore in this sprawling city from historical and religious sites to beaches, malls, cafes, fine dining restaurants, bazaars, art centres and lively nightlife! Colombo is also a great place to encounter Sri Lankan architecture that spans across a long timeline – from the remnants of ancient ruins to colonial and modern architecture, it’s all here! Geoffrey Bawa’s influence is quite evident in this city too, with several significant structures being created by him.
Your drive to Colombo will be quite short, which will leave you with plenty of time to explore the city. Here we will visit the Seema Malaka, a delicate floating Buddhist temple created by Geoffrey Bawa with echoes of Tropical Modernism. Thereafter, you will go for a quick tour of Independence Square and the colonial buildings of the Colombo Fort area, before heading over for lunch at The Gallery Cafe, which was formerly used by Bawa as his office. After a delicious lunch and a tour of the exquisitely designed premises, you are free to explore Colombo at your leisure.
The agenda today is concerned mainly with post-colonial architecture. The 70’s in Sri Lanka saw a boom in architectural designs that were precast, large, and low-cost solid structures. This was due to the government at the time focussing on being self-sufficient and using locally made materials. Architects like Valentine Gunasekara, Ashley de Voss & Vijitha Basnayake are credited with moving on from this era and forging ahead with new designs. Anjelendan, Anura Ratnavibhushana, Channa Daswatte, Suchith Mohotti, Vinod Jayasinghe and Murad are architects who took on the challenge for change thereafter, and created more modern designs. The architecture tour today will visit creations by some of these architects and will also include a tour of the Colombo Museum, which itself is a building with wonderful architecture.
We’ve reached the end of your 18-night architecture tour holiday and it is time to depart. Your chauffeur will meet you at the hotel lobby and take you to Colombo Airport in time to catch your departure flight.

The important stuff:
Sri Lanka is a nation where religion and culture occupy an important place in the day-to-day lives of the local people. It is important to be aware of the customs and practices that are particular to the location you are visiting, so here are a few general tips to keep in mind during your travels. Your guide / chauffeur will assist you with more detailed information.
- If you plan on visiting any temples, ancient or current, you should wear clothing that covers your body from your shoulders down to your knees. Head coverings such as caps or helmets should be removed and shoes must be taken off at the entrance. White coloured clothing is generally a good choice to go with here.
- Some religious places do not allow photography or videography without prior permission and some may not allow it at all. Refer to signage or ask your chauffeur guide about the policy or protocol. Don’t try to photograph or take videos without permission.
- If you have any tattoos associated with Buddhism, Hinduism or Islamism, it’s best that you cover them completely in public places.
- Smoking is prohibited in indoor public places, workplaces and on public transport.
