1st Night - Colombo

Ayubowan! Welcome to your Train Tour Holiday in Sri Lanka. Your first destination is the vibrant city of Colombo, which is a short drive away from the airport. There is much to see in this sprawling city from historical and religious sites to beaches, malls, cafes, art centres and lively nightlife! There are also many impressive cultural sights, grand colonial era buildings, vibrant markets and bazaars to explore and your chauffeur can guide you with your choices. Being a melting pot of cultures, it is also home to a variety of cuisines that range from finger-licking-good street food to eclectic fine dining.

The first day of your Train Tour Holiday in Sri Lanka can be enjoyed at your own pace. You will be picked up from the airport by your private chauffeur and taken to your hotel. If you arrive during the day you can explore Colombo which, for a modern city, has a surprising number of historical sites and temples. The city is quite alive at night with nightclubs, late night movies and cafes being popular haunts. But if that’s not your style you could always head to Galle Face beach for a nighttime stroll, and experience a more chilled out atmosphere full of street food vendors and families having picnics.

2nd & 3rd Nights - Jaffna

It’s time for your first train journey in Sri Lanka! On the outside, the journey to Jaffna is coloured by blue skies, lush green rice paddy fields, forests, lakes, birds, animals, the iconic Palmyrah trees of the North, and daily village life. On the inside, you have the opportunity to chat and connect with locals, and sample local snacks – samosas, vadeys, kadala, achcharu and more – sold on the train. On the whole, the ride is a fantastic way to experience a slice of Sri Lanka without having to get out of your seat!

After an early breakfast you will be driven to the Fort Railway Station, to board the train to Jaffna along with your experienced, private guide. The journey normally takes about 7 hours to cover the 397 kilometres; but the ride is never dull and the ever changing landscape along with the interesting people on the train will keep you entertained all the way to the Northern Peninsula. In Jaffna, you will be treated to an authentic local lunch full of local specialities including the famous Jaffna Crab Curry. In the evening, your guide will take you on a tour of Jaffna City to see its highlights and experience more local culinary delights!

In the morning, you will board a ferry and head to Delft Island. Due to the shallow waters and reefs around it, this island was highly defensible and occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch and British in the past. You will visit ruins from these occupations as well as a 1,000 year-old temple. During your exploration you will also encounter a population of feral ponies descended from those abandoned by the colonists, an ancient Baobab tree (rarely seen outside of Africa), a pigeon tower for messenger pigeons, the ‘Devil’s Well’ which provides drinking water, a growing rock, and a mysterious footprint left by Adam… or Hanuman depending on who you talk to!

4th Night - Anuradhapura

It is time to head out to one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world! Dating back to the 4th century BCE, Anuradhapura was probably the greatest monastic city of the ancient world and was a proud political capital that dominated the country for over 1,300 years. Massive man-made lakes, towering dagobas, ancient ruins and vast paddy fields are some of the features dotted about the landscape that you will love visiting. It’s a great place to understand Buddhist culture, rural village life, and continue discovering authentic Sri Lankan dishes.

After breakfast you will be driven down to Anuradhapura. This vast city is full of amazing ancient Sri Lankan architecture and you will visit: Ruwanwelisaya – one of the world’s tallest ancient monuments which houses the Buddha’s relics, Thuparamaya – the first Buddhist temple, Lovamahapaya – a nine storied skyscraper of the ancient world, Isurumuniya – famous for its intriguing carvings, the 4th century CE Samadhi Statue carved out of dolomite marble, Kuttam Pokuna and Eth Pokuna – elaborately constructed bathing ponds, and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi – the 2,250 year-old sacred Bo tree, grown from the southern branch of the sacred Bo tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment.

5th & 6th Nights - Sigiriya

It’s time to hit the road again and take a scenic drive to Sigiriya. Along the way you are likely to spot many birds and animals, including the iconic Sri Lankan wild elephant. Your destination is the home of the famed Sigiriya Rock Fortress with its water features, landscaped gardens and amazing 360 degree views. The marvels continue at the ancient city of Polonnaruwa which is dotted with palaces, shrines, monasteries, pavilions, parks, ponds and irrigation lakes. Your visit will also include a safari to Minneriya National Park to witness ‘The Gathering’, a seasonally recurring event where hundreds of elephants congregate on a drying lake bed.

You will head to Sigiriya after breakfast. An authentic Sri Lankan lunch awaits you at your hotel and the excursion to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is set for late afternoon. At the Fortress, you can take your time leisurely exploring the vast boulder gardens and water gardens before heading up. The climb up the rock is quite easy, as it is made up of walkways and steps with guide rails. Halfway up the rock, you will encounter the famous Sigiriya frescoes and you will reach the summit just in time to catch a gorgeous sunset highlighting the panoramic view all around you.

After breakfast, your holiday continues with a scenic drive to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa. This ancient capital of Sri Lanka is steeped in historical and religious significance, and famed for its well preserved sculptures and architecture. Here you will see strong Indian influences melding with a growing Sri Lankan identity in the architecture, art and sculptures of this sprawling ancient city. At lunch you will be treated to an authentic clay pot meal experience that is packed with delicious Sri Lankan dishes and sweets. After  lunch you will take off on a safari to Minneriya National Park to enjoy some wildlife sightings as well as witness ‘The Gathering’.
itinerary-thumb-5

7th Night - Kandy

On the way to Kandy, a short distance from Sigiriya, is the town of Dambulla. Although it is an innocuous looking town, it has enormous economic and religious significance, so there is much to see here. The 2,000 year-old Dambulla Cave Temple, and the massive fresh produce trading hub, are a couple of the major highlights in this area. A stop on the way at Kadugannawa Railway Museum is a must to view old locomotives, carriages, machinery, and equipment from days gone by. Kandy, your destination, was the hill country capital city of the last Sri Lankan King, and is full of legends, mediaeval palaces, and sacred temples.

After breakfast you will visit the Dambulla fruit & vegetable market which is a massive hub for fresh produce trading. After touring the market and sampling various produce, you will head over to the Dambulla Cave Temple. You can explore the 5 sacred caves of this World Heritage Site and also climb Dambulla Rock to enjoy the panoramic views. On the outskirts of Kandy, you will visit the Kadugannawa Railway Museum. In Kandy city, you will visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha and witness a daily sacred ritual known as Thewawa. An experienced Railway Station Master will join you for dinner, and share his field experience as well as some railway history with you.
itinerary-thumb-6

8th & 9th Nights - Nuwara Eliya

All aboard! It’s time to hitch a ride on a train and head further up the picturesque hill country on your Sri Lankan train tour. The ride itself is wonderfully scenic, and will give you the opportunity to chat and connect with locals. Tea estate draped mountains, waterfalls, delicious food, cold weather and hot tea are just some of the highlights of Nuwara Eliya. The Horton Plains National Park, a high altitude nature reserve, will also be part of your tour here. This reserve is rich in biodiversity and features the spectacular cliff drop known as ‘World’s End’.

After breakfast you will catch the train to Nuwara Eliya. Travelling on 19th century British-built train tracks, you will encounter the usage of Single Line Train Tablets during your ride. This is a method devised in the late 19th century to avoid collisions on a single railway line, which is still in use today on some railway lines in Sri Lanka.  After reaching Nuwara Eliya and enjoying an authentic Sri Lankan lunch, you will head out on a guided walking tour. Nuwara Eliya town has a great mix of colonial and Tudor architecture, historical sites and temples, amazing views, and cuisines, all of which you will encounter on your walking tour.

A pre-dawn start will see you heading up to Horton Plains. This vast National Park spans approximately 10,000 hectares and is home to a variety of animals such as sambar, deer, wild boar, wild hares, and leopards. You can also find plenty of birdlife and unique vegetation. Along the fairly easy 9 kilometre circular trail, you will encounter the famous 1.2 kilometre sheer cliff drop known as World’s End and the cool, refreshing Baker’s Falls.  In the evening, you will head to a tea factory to find out how tea goes from being a leaf on a bush, to a warm cup of golden goodness!
itinerary-thumb-7

10th Night - Ella

It’s time to jump on a train again and your next destination is Ella! The ride is wonderfully scenic and will give you the opportunity to chat with locals, and sample local snacks sold on the train. Demodara Station, where you will disembark, is very unique as it is the only station in the world where the line passes under itself and goes around a loop before emerging from a tunnel directly beneath the station. The Ella region is perched on a cliff and is filled with views for days, spectacular waterfalls, a cool climate, and warm, welcoming people. Be prepared for amazing hikes, waterfall bathing, great nightlife, and awesome street food!

After breakfast, your chauffeur will drop you at the Nanu Oya railway station. The train will take you all the way to Ella and the ride is wonderfully scenic so keep your camera primed and ready. Your chauffeur will be waiting to pick you up at Demodara railway station to take you to your hotel in Ella. The rest of the day is left free for you to explore your surroundings. Ella has some great hiking trails and all of them have amazing views, so don’t forget to take your camera gear along. In the night you can check out the vibrant nightlife and enjoy the varied cuisines and local cocktails.
itinerary-thumb-8

11th Night - Yala

It’s time to head to Leopard Country, all the way in the Deep South. Yala National Park is a great place for exciting sightings and this leg of your journey will introduce you to some amazing wildlife! Apart from Leopards, you will encounter Elephants, Crocodiles, Sambar, Eagles, Cobras, Peacocks and more during your Private Safari in the Park. Your accommodation will be quite unique during this leg of the journey as you will be staying in a tent, glamping style, with all the modern amenities. The secure campsite is situated right on the border of the Park, which means that there will be plenty of safe encounters without even leaving the camp premises.

An early morning start will take you on a fun hike up the mountain known as Little Adam’s Peak, where you can take in the panoramic scenery of the highlands laid out below you. After breakfast you will visit the highly Instagrammed Nine Arches Bridge. Occasionally, the train pauses on the bridge to give visitors a special photo opportunity, so keep your fingers crossed for that. After that, you will take a scenic drive down to Yala National Park and arrive in the evening.  At night you will be treated to an alfresco candle light dinner experience under the stars, and partake in a night walk along the borders of the Park.
itinerary-thumb-9

12th Night - Galle

It’s time to head out from the deep jungles of Yala, and journey to the culture rich coastal town of Galle. Undoubtedly, the most prominent feature of this town is the famous Galle Fort. This UNESCO World Heritage site was originally built by the Portuguese, extended by the Dutch and modified by the British during their respective colonisations. Today, it is a beautifully eclectic mix of cosy homes, cafes, intriguing stores, quirky hotels and art galleries frequented by travellers, artists, writers, photographers and designers. The best way to experience it all would be to stay within the Fort, and that is precisely what you will be doing!

Your day will start early with a safari at dawn, and a hearty picnic breakfast will be included to maximise your time in the Park. After the safari, you will be driven to Galle and meet a farmer on the way who will introduce you to the process of making Buffalo Curd. After checking into your hotel, you will be taken on a guided walking tour of the Fort where you’ll get an insight into the colonial history, legends and mysteries of the Fort. You are free to explore and experience the fort thereafter, but we do recommend that you head to the ramparts in the evening to watch the sunset whilst enjoying some street food.
itinerary-thumb-10

13th Night - Negombo

Your last night in Sri Lanka will be spent at the coastal fishing town of Negombo, which is a short distance away from the airport.  There’s lots to see in this town, so feel free to explore, either on your own or with your trusty personal chauffeur. With multicoloured fishing boats, golden beaches, churches and buildings influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonisation, art galleries and a fascinating mix of cuisines, Negombo is a great place to get lost in, make memories and take lots and lots of pictures!

An early start to the day will see you headed to the Galle railway station armed with a delicious packed breakfast. The train hugs the coast, providing a different flavour to the scenery encountered on your trip thus far. Your chauffeur will meet you at Maradana railway station and take you for a tour of the Train Repair Yard in Dematagoda. Thereafter you will take a short drive to Negombo where you can explore the town, visit the art galleries, and of course, catch some sun on the wide, golden beaches. At night, the best place to visit is ‘Hotel Road’, which is packed with bars, seafood restaurants and hotels.

We’ve reached the end of your 13-night Sri Lankan train tour holiday and it is time to depart. Your chauffeur will meet you at the hotel lobby and take you to Colombo Airport in time to catch your departure flight.

Everything you need to know about the tour

We’ve taken every possible measure to ensure your safety and comfort during this tour.

The hotels, tours, add-ons, guides and chauffeurs who are part of this programme are carefully vetted, so that you enjoy the highest quality standards and enjoy your tour with peace of mind. At any given point of the tour you will always be within reach of your guide or chauffeur, either physically or via phone (e.g: when you are out exploring on your own), for any assistance.

The important stuff:

Sri Lanka is a nation where religion and culture occupy an important place in the day-to-day lives of the local people. It is important to be aware of the customs and practices that are particular to the location you are visiting, so here are a few general tips to keep in mind during your travels. Your guide / chauffeur will assist you with more detailed information.

  • If you plan on visiting any temples, ancient or current, you should wear clothing that covers your body from your shoulders down to your knees. Head coverings such as caps or helmets should be removed and shoes must be taken off at the entrance. White coloured clothing is generally a good choice to go with here.
  • Some religious places do not allow photography or videography without prior permission and some may not allow it at all. Refer to signage or ask your chauffeur guide about the policy or protocol. Don’t try to photograph or take videos without permission.
  • If you have any tattoos associated with Buddhism, Hinduism or Islamism, it’s best that you cover them completely in public places.
  • Smoking is prohibited in indoor public places, workplaces and on public transport.

Included:

About pricing:

Although it may sound strange for a tropical country, Sri Lankan hotels operate on seasonal rates. This is simply due to a particular region having attractions or weather that’s best enjoyed during a specific time of the year and also due to the demand coinciding with the European winter season. So it’s not uncommon to have two rates that apply on different dates in the same month.

But to make things less complicated for you, Experiential Journeys does things differently by giving you the lowest season ball-park rate on the website, and follows up with the exact rate upon receiving an inquiry or booking request along with the confirmed travel dates. You will not be charged anything until the final price is agreed upon.

Experiential Journeys is an Australian based company and uses AUD as the main currency. We serve a global community of travellers predominantly from New Zealand, U.K., U.S.A., Canada & U.A.E.
