The treks are classed as Grade A, B and C in terms of difficulty, and you can pick the difficulty that suits you, based on fitness levels and personal preference.

Grade A treks tend to be the easiest, taking place in lower altitudes with short durations of 4 to 7 hours. Although the trails aren’t completely flat, anyone who is reasonably fit enough to handle a weekend hill walk will love this trek.

Grade B treks take it up a notch and can range from 5 to 8 hours in length. Apart from the duration, they can take place in a higher elevation or with slightly harder conditions on the ground compared to Grade A treks. A reasonable amount of fitness will be needed to handle this increased difficulty.

Grade C treks are quite strenuous and require excellent fitness levels. Higher altitudes, climate variations, remoteness, and trek lengths of 6 to 8 hours can be expected here. Previous trekking experience will be helpful, but newbies can also undertake these treks provided that they have fitness levels suited for these conditions.

Please note that the gradings are only overall indicators of difficulty. The following factors should also be considered, when picking a trek:

  • The length of the trek and overall time spent walking each day.
  • The average altitude, as well as the altitude gain and loss.
  • The trail conditions.
  • The level of backpacking required.
  • The temperature range. Being a tropical country, the temperature can vary quite quickly. The hotter, coastal areas and lowlands tend to range around 25 °C to 33 °C, and the colder hill country can range from 10 °C to 23 °C.
  • The weather conditions. The rainy season for the Western, South-Western and Central regions is from May to July, due to the South-East monsoon; The North and East tend to experience rain in December and January, due to the North-West monsoon.
  • The level of humidity should also be considered, as it can jump from 70% to 90% in a short period of time.
  • The remoteness to services and general level of comfort during the trek.

Whichever programme you choose, this trekking tour will be a great way to combine your passion for the outdoors with a vacation that will take you up close and personal with the beauty and culture of Sri Lanka!
