Little Rome of Sri Lanka

Negombo is often called Little Rome due to the strong Catholic influence within the region, a result of Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial rule.

Negombo is a wonderful mixture of cultures and sights to be seen. Featuring hundreds of multicoloured fishing boats, golden beaches, churches and buildings influenced by colonisation, art galleries and a fascinating mix of cuisines, Negombo is a great place to get lost in, make memories and take lots and lots of pictures!

A colourful town with a colonial past

At night, ‘Hotel Road’ which is packed with bars, seafood restaurants, and hotels of course, comes alive and is a great place to hangout.

The town was fought over by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonists in the past as it was fertile ground for growing Cinnamon, a highly sought after commodity in the spice trade of the old world. The strong catholic presence was an indirect effect of these successive occupations. The architectural influences leftover from these colonisations are still visible and the canal system is one such construction which is used even today.

Negombo Fish Market

Only taking a hiatus for sabbath, the Negombo fish market operates on all other days. It’s a fantastic place to visit, especially early in the morning, to witness the amazing variety of fish being offloaded from the boats and the trading that commences before the catch hits the ground.

Negombo Lagoon

Full of little rivers and canals, and bordered by the Indian Ocean on one side, the vast Negombo lagoon is best explored on a boat and at leisure. The waters of the lagoon are a rich source of fish, crabs, and lobsters and are popular hunting grounds for fishermen.

Negombo beach

The wide, golden beaches of Negombo are quite famous and because of that, a variety of hotels and restaurants can be found right next to them. The beaches are quite popular with locals and travellers, and are great for long walks, beach volleyball and football, sunbathing, and sumptuous picnics.

Negombo Dutch Fort & the City

Originally constructed by the Portuguese, the fort was renovated by the Dutch in later years, but is sadly now in ruins. The city has plenty of churches and buildings from its colonial past that can be visited and a ride along the British built Hamilton Canal is quite enjoyable too.

Beach Road [ Shopping / Dining out options ]

Beach Road and Hotel Road all refer to the stretch of road that runs parallel to the beach and is one the most popular areas for travellers. The stretch features an eclectic range of restaurants and a variety of hotels ranging from budget offerings to absolute luxury.
