The views in Ella are its most spectacular and dominant feature, and on a clear day the view extends all the way down to the South Coast of Sri Lanka. Ella is a great place to relax, hike, engage in adventure sports, indulge in diverse cuisines, and enjoy nature.
The highly sought after train ride to Ella from Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) is very picturesque, and the ride winds its way past tea estates, jungles, villages and waterfalls. It also goes across the highly photographed 9 Arches Bridge and ends at Demodara Station, one of the most unique railway stations in the world. The ride is also a great way to chat with locals, and sample local snacks.
This little 1,141-metre-high mountain is an excellent vantage point to enjoy panoramic views of the highlands around it. It is quite an easy climb to the top, unlike the climb up the actual Adam’s Peak, and is a popular spot with visitors of all ages.
This is one of the most famous lookout points in the Ella region due the breathtaking views that can be taken in from there. The trail leading to it is quite interesting too; it starts from the railway station and passes through villages, plantations and bushes before reaching the top.
Constructed during colonial times, this stone bridge with its famous 9 arches is quite picturesque. The lack of available steel during the Great War is cited as the main reason for the stone and cement approach. Occasionally, the train pauses on the bridge to give visitors a special photo opportunity.
Named after the villain of the Ramayana epic, these falls are an impressive sight, frightening even during the rainy season. The waterfall is 82 feet high and is situated quite close to the city. Ravana is said to have held Sita Devi captive in the caves around the area.
According to legends, Ravana had a massive network of tunnels carved out under the hills, facilitating quick travel across his kingdom. The caves in Ella are reportedly part of this network and visitors can access them by going on a short hike. The 2500-year-old Ravana Ella temple is also closeby.
The Demodara Loop represents clever thinking on the part of railway engineers who had to get a train up a very steep hill. The solution resulted in a unique railway line that passes under itself and goes around a loop before emerging from a tunnel directly beneath the station.
Due to its ever growing popularity, the cuisine in Ella is diverse and an attraction in itself. It’s quite easy to find Western, Indian, Chinese, as well as authentic Sri Lankan cuisines all over town. The abundant street food is best discovered during a walking tour of the city.
