The wide range of climates and habitats found in Sri Lanka are home to 120 species of mammals, 171 species of reptiles and 106 species of amphibians. The National Parks you will visit during your wildlife holiday to Sri Lanka play a huge role in protecting and preserving these habitats.

Safaris in Sri Lanka can be experienced in multiple ways. Udawalawe National Park safaris, Yala National Park safaris and Wilpattu National Park safaris can be experienced by jeep; some parks have the option of doing boat safaris, but others, like Sinharaja Forest Reserve, are purely trekking based.

Sri Lanka is home to one of the world’s largest populations of blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins too. Mirissa, on the south coast, would be the best location to see all 3 of these wonderful creatures. If leopard and sloth bear sightings are what you are after, the best national park in Sri Lanka to head to, would be Yala. Elephants are easier to spot as they are sometimes found grazing outside of the Parks. But the best elephant safari in Sri Lanka has to be to witness ‘The Gathering’ which is a seasonally recurring event, where over 300 elephants congregate on the drying lake bed of Minneriya National Park.

A diverse population of birds calls Sri Lanka home too! Apart from the 34 endemic species, there are another 54 species that are endemic to Sri Lanka & India. The country also has 240 migratory species that arrive during specific periods of the year. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is home to a curious and unique phenomenon known as a ‘Bird Wave’, where individuals from up to 40 different species function as a flock and go on a feeding wave together. These wildlife tours will also be enhanced by mixing enthralling excursions, fabulous accommodations and some really amazing food, making this a holiday to be enjoyed in many layers!
