Pilgrimage up the Sacred Mountain – Adam’s Peak

Recommended to travel : Throughout the year
Climb with pilgrims and witness the mystical sunrise.

Climbing Adam’s Peak can be a challenging yet rewarding experience, providing breathtaking views and insight into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.

Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims regard it as a sacred site, and the pilgrim season runs from the full moon in December to the full moon in May. During this season, you can do a night climb, starting a few hours before dawn to witness the sunrise at Adam’s Peak’s zenith and returning on the same day. In the early morning hours, you will not only see a spectacular sunrise but also a triangular shadow cast by the peak on the clouds below.

Between May and December, a day climb would be the best option as you will not be able to witness the sunrise.

This climb is not only an adventure but also a great opportunity to meet and interact with the locals.

Why should you book this trip?

  • Watch the sunrise from the summit of Butterfly Mountain. In the early morning hours,Great opportunity to interact with local communities.
  • During the pilgrimage season (December to May), you will be in the company of pilgrims of various faiths, each of whom claims that the sacred footprint of Sri Pada on the mountain was created by one of their own faiths. You will witness a peaceful congregation united by a single belief.
  • According to legend, the Buddha left his footprint in the rock at the summit of this verdant conical mountain on his third and final visit to the island. Christians believe it was left by St. Thomas the Apostle, while Hindus believe it was left by Lord Shiva.
