The name Bentota is derived from Bem Tota, as ancient legends describe the tota or river bank being ruled by the demon Bem. The town has long been associated with ayurvedic healing and plays a major role in turtle conservation projects too.
The soft sandy beaches of Bentota were a favourite for travellers the world over, long before the South Coast became popular. Bentota remained popular because of its unique offering of a wide river on one side and the vast Indian Ocean on the other, making it conducive to a variety of water sports. Snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, bodyboarding and more are all part of the fun activities here.
Clear waters, golden sandy beaches, palm trees swaying to the ocean breeze… it's the perfect recipe for a great beach vacation and Bentota delivers that in spades. Most areas are swim friendly too, making it very safe for the numerous water sport activities that are enjoyed here.
Lovingly crafted across a period of 50 years by Geoffrey Bawa, the father of modern architecture in Sri Lanka, these vast gardens are simply spectacular. With its ancient Sri Lankan water gardens, Italian Renaissance gardens, sculptures, and Japanese garden art, Lunuganga is an amazing wonderland to get lost in.
Bevis Bawa, an illustrious landscaper, had a vision to create a wonderland which resulted in The Brief Garden. Crafted to perfection across several decades, this 20-acre garden is a masterpiece with a wonderful mix of plantlife, water features, anthropomorphic flower vases, fantastical head sculptures and inspired landscaping.
Rich in biodiversity, the Madu river area is surrounded by marshlands and mangrove forests. With over 300 varieties of plantlife, the region is home to wild boar, monkey and smaller mammals, as well as a plethora of birdlife. The best way to explore this region would be via boat safari.
