In the past Tangalle was an important anchorage for the Dutch and British colonists, and structures from that era can still be seen today.
The waters in the main bay are not suitable for swimming, even though they are protected by the reef. However, there are plenty of smaller bays around it, where it is safe to swim. Thanks to the gentle wave breaks, Tangalle has fast become the ‘go to’ place for beginner surfers. The rocks on one side and the hill on the other also offer protection for surfers from onshore winds.
Although beaches are aplenty in Tangalle, a few are more renowned than the others. Hiriketiya Bay with its fine sand and clear waters, secluded and semi-private Silent Beach with its proximity to a luxury hotel, and Rekawa with its wide beaches are among the must-visit locations.
The South Coast is renowned for turtle conservation projects, and Rekawa Beach is possibly the most famous of those. Although the conservation centre can be visited at any time, the ideal season to watch turtles laying eggs at night is between April to July.
The 7 cave temples of Mulkirigala are a short drive away from Tangalle, and are located on 5 terraced areas at different elevations. Situated on a rock, much like Sigiriya, this temple complex is home to ancient statues, paintings, and sculptures dating back to the 3rd century.
Located close to Hungama, this sanctuary is a great place to encounter both marine life and bird life. Multiple habitats can be encountered here, including coastal lagoons, mangrove swamps and open grasslands. The sanctuary is also home to many species of threatened birds and reptiles.
Hiriketiya is arguably the most famous surfing destination in Tangalle, thanks to the conch shell shaped bay and the never ending swells. However, Kudawella is also a great surf spot during the November to March season, as is Unakuruwa, another popular spot with left and right breaks.
