Nestled high up in the hills, under the shadow of Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain, is the quaint old town of Nuwara Eliya. Tea estate draped mountains, waterfalls, delicious food, cold weather, hot tea, friendly people and colonial architecture are just some of the highlights of this region.
Home to horse races, flower shows, innumerable waterfalls, botanical gardens, the tallest mountain and a high altitude National Park, Nuwara Eliya has plenty of interesting attractions to be experienced. The region lends itself well to hiking, meditation, adventure sports, birding and… just being, making it a wonderful destination for all types of travellers. It gives off holiday vibes eternally, regardless of the seasons, and is an extremely family friendly place.
This vast high altitude National Park spans approximately 10,000 hectares and is home to a variety of animals, birdlife and unique vegetation. The infamous 1.2 kilometre sheer cliff drop known as World’s End and the cool, refreshing Baker’s Falls are also found here.
Located in the centre of the city, Victoria Park is a popular haunt for families and nature lovers. The park is full of rare floral plants, exotic birds, peaceful ponds and picturesque areas. It also contains a kids' play area and a few rides too.
Once a swampy bog, the area was transformed into a picturesque lake in 1873 by British Governor Sir William Gregory. The lake was created by damming a stream originating from Mount Pidurutalagala. It has been an immensely popular spot ever since and is used for watersports and recreational activities.
Dedicated to Sita Devi, wife of Lord Rama in Hindu mythology, this holy temple is located close to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens. Circular depressions found on a nearby rock face are attributed to being footprints left by Lord Hanuman when he was searching for Sita Devi at Lord Rama’s behest.
Nuwara Eliya City and its beautiful colonial era structures are best explored on foot due to the lay of the land. The market is a busy, noisy and colourful place with goods ranging from Batik clothing, handicrafts, trinkets, and other locally produced goods to the freshest fruits and vegetables.
Founded in 1889, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia. Arguably the most picturesque, this high altitude 18-hole golf course presents plenty of challenges to even the most seasoned golfer, and often features in international tournaments.
Located just outside the city, the Moon Plains is a wide open area where sightings of a plethora of birds and wild animals can be enjoyed. A feature of this location is a mini World’s End, which offers spectacular views of the countryside and the surrounding mountain peaks.
Initially established as a Cinchona plantation in 1861, it was turned into a botanical garden in 1884. Famous for its Orchids and Roses, the garden boasts over 10,000 species of flora. According to folklore, Sita Devi of Ramayana fame, was said to be held captive in this region.
