Near impregnable for several centuries, Kandy was a stronghold and the last of the great kingdoms of Sri Lanka. It is full of legends, mediaeval palaces, and sacred temples. Religion is a key theme you will encounter here, with many temples dedicated to worshipping Lord Buddha and significant Hindu Gods.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa is the chief highlight of this city, as it houses the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The relic is taken out on a grand multi-day procession once a year, in a ceremony known as the Esala Perahera. The Perahera is a fantastic spectacle with adorned elephants, fire dancers, drummers and many other performers. The procession is thought to date back to the 3rd century BCE.
With its origins being traced as far back as 1371 BCE, the Gardens boast an extensive list of over 4,000 species of plants which include orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Located a short distance away from Kandy city, it attracts over a million visitors annually.
The temple is a fascinating place to visit as it features mediaeval architecture, sculptures, murals, ancient rituals and, of course, the sacred tooth relic which is stored in a gold casket. The National Museum is a great place to learn about Kandyan history and legacy.
This picturesque lake, smack bang in the middle of the town, was built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in the 19th century. The lake also features a little island which was used by the Queen and the ladies of the court as a Royal Summer House.
The Commonwealth War Cemetery serves as a modest and serene memorial to soldiers of the British Empire, who gave their lives during World War II. Although predominantly British, other nationalities such as East Africans, Sri Lankans, Indians and Canadians are buried among the 203 graves here.
Kandy City is best experienced on foot, as it has plenty of nooks and crannies to explore apart from its main attractions. The Central Market is a busy, noisy and colourful place with goods ranging from gorgeous Batik clothing to the freshest fruits and vegetables.
One of the oldest in the country, this railway station is found on the Matale-Peradeniya line. Kandy has a long association with railways and the Kadugannawa Railway Museum commemorates this with a great collection of old locomotives, carriages, machinery, and equipment from days gone by.
Kandy offers some amazingly diverse options when it comes to dining. It’s quite easy to find Western, Indian, Malaysian, Fusion as well as authentic Sri Lankan cuisines all over town. The street food is quite abundant too and is best discovered during a walking tour of the city.
